1977 ~ Mayor of Castro
“I wanted it to mean something. I thought about one of my favourite cities in the world -San Francisco. A period in time that draws me in - the 70s. Finally, something that happened in that time, a pivotal moment, an inspirational Human and all signs immediately pointed to Harvey Milk.”
When I thought about launching our first ever aromatherapy candle, a few factors were particularly important when developing the product. Of course, it had to be clean burning, contain natural ingredients and pure essential oils. The container and label - earth friendly and beautiful but another important detail was the meaning behind it.
Milk was nicknamed ‘The mayor of Castro Street'
To keep it brief, Harvey was the first openly gay man to be elected into office in 1977 - joining the San Francisco Board of City Supervisors. A hard earned, long sought after position where he fronted the gay rights movement. A pivotal moment in history. Harvey was later assassinated alongside Mayor Moscone within the grounds of City Hall, a moment feared by Harvey for a long time but one in which he choose to stare bravely in the face each day to fulfil his role and fight the good fight.
His unapologetic proclamation of his identity gave new hope to LGBTQ+ people, who faced severe discrimination. Thousands marched in his honour after his death and his words live on as a source of pride and inspiration.

Our candle celebrates Harvey, the Human Rights Movement he so theatrically and proudly lead and all of the individuals and their personal journey through the years past, present and future. The hope given, hardships faced, lives lost and ongoing battles still to be fought.
